1941-1945: The Cold War arose out of the Second World War, when the West found itself, by Hitler's action in attacking his Soviet ally, in awkward alliance with Stalin against the Nazis.
1945: February 4-11-- YALTA Conference. Cold War begins An American newsreel; Monty Python; a modern piece. •
1945: August 6 -- United States first used atomic bomb in war on Hiroshima. This video is not in the best taste, but it's very watchable (excepted from this more sombre documentary). •
1945: August 8 -- Russia enters war against Japan •
1945: August 14 -- Japanese surrender End of World War II •
1946: March -- Winston Churchill delivers "Iron Curtain" Speech •
1947: March -- Truman declares active role in Greek Civil War: THE TRUMAN DOCTRINE (see p. 109) •
1947: June -- MARSHALL PLAN is announced •
1948: February -- Communist takeover in Czechoslovakia •
1948: June 24 -- Berlin Blockade begins. West responds with BERLIN AIRLIFT: contemporary footage: 1, 2, 3, 4. •
1949: July -- NATO ratified •
